It is the year 888, 16 years after Harald Hårfagre united various petty kingdoms into a single realm, becoming the first king of Norway, and 15 years since Frida Ingunsdaughter was born into slavery.
These are turbulent times; even though Harald won the great battle of Hafrsfjord, the victory did not result in peace and prosperity. Many of those who remain of the old elite now live in poverty and exile, leading frequent skirmishes and looting expeditions into the surrounding areas.
Frida is sold only weeks after her mother disappeared under strange conditions. Without knowing it, she becomes entangled in the currents and whirlpools boiling under the surface of the new nation.
But Frida’s goals are clear: to escape captivity and find out what happened to her mother. She will risk her life for freedom and the chance to get back to her people…
